Portrait of a Village

A film by Catherine Losing

“I made this film in the village my family had to leave in the 1940s.

It began as an exploration of my feelings about being British with a Grandfather who fought for the nazis and a recent revelation that I have Jewish ancestors. It ended up being a celebration of the wonderful Ukrainian villagers who replaced my Black Sea German relatives”

This film was created as part of an artist's residency at the Museum of Modern Art Odessa, Ukraine. Me, my partner and our one-year-old son relocated to Odessa to research and film.

I love to film things, tell stories, and read on the subway. I'm pretty sure blue whales are my power animal.
